I know not a lot of readers read this blog if there aren't chapter notes to go over...okay so I know not a lot of readers read it then either, but I'm going to ask it here first and see if I get any early response. I'll mention it next time I update Juniper as well.
Basically, my original frame for Juniper included a rather small cross over. It isn't really connected to the main plot but it would drift in and out for a while (no it's not Harry Potter, though that might be really fun to play with some day).
Without revealing too much right now, I'd just like to sound out how readers feel about cross overs in general.
The first chapter that would include the cross over is 'approaching' - really, really slowly, but still approaching. And I'd just like to start feeling out whether or not I should take it off the board.
I'll probably give more details later if I'm still undecided, but any opinions now would help.

I'm not big on crossovers. I like canon being messed with, but crossovers? Nah. They don't sit well with me.
ReplyDeleteSorry I don't have a better opinion than that.
I hope more people reply.
I am iffy, I like the occasional beliveable crossovers, but I also happen to like this story as straight Naruto. I mean if you were using a few pieces from other manga that I could see, but this really strikes me as pure naruto fic, not crossover...just my thoughts, but either way i can;t see you going horribly wrong...
ReplyDeleteIf the crossover is not overdone it can be believable. However, one thing that I've seen other fics do this late in the fic is have a "small" crossover that shifts the focus to these other characters so much that it jars you (the reader) right out of their world. I would say if you do keep it in, just be subtle ['cause you have a problem with that, right? :)] and explain the characters as if they were OC for those of us who don't know the series.
ReplyDeleteIt depends on what you would be crossing the story over with. As you're a good writer, I assume you can write a small crossover believably. My biggest reluctance is whether or not I know (have read, watched, etc.) whatever you're crossing it with.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the all the comments so far, I'm still debating it so it's appreciated. I'll probably explain more if I'm still considering the crossover once 'Snakes' is fully written.
ReplyDeleteI don't really feel like the idea of a crossover is a great idea, if you're planning to introduce characters from that alternate universe. You see, people might not know that other story, and then they would sit totally sad that they don't understand your story. It has happened to me not long ago - I have been reading a really long fic, and then, a few chapters before the end, I realized the sequel was a crossover with Buffy and Charmed; two shows I know but never actually watched. I was so upset I haven't finished reading since - I have no idea what the characters from those shows are like, there's no way I could read a fanfic on them and really enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteOn another hand, if no characters or places introduced, or they are really brief, then it's okay. Let's say, bringing in a Shinigami who looks like Ryuuk from Death Note or Hitsugaya from Bleach, but would be gone after Orochimaru's hands are sealed, and maybe leave some info for the plot - that would be okay. Or, let's say you decided that dragons would exist in this, and explain how there were ppl flying on them (Eragon :D) in some other continent... I don't think anyone would really mind subtle things like that. :)
I AM a crossover fan, with two caveats:
ReplyDelete-I have to be familliar with both series. (Otherwise, what's the point?)
-It's not just gratuitous- a cross-over for the sake of having certain characters meet stuck in the middle of what would be a perfectly fine fic without it.
I fear that this fic might become the second option. I think it is one of my favorite straight (non-crossover) Naruto fics, and while you might pull it off, there is such an original and absorbing plot that I fear crossover themes could only distract.
Well, it wasn't going to be that type. It had more to do with elements or another world, than it did specific characters. I'm still debating it though.
ReplyDeleteAs a fan of throwing characters into other worlds just to mess with them (often as one-shots that, while comedic, aren't suited for longer writings and often never make it to FFnet) I'd say go for it. Like "R" said earlier, if you approach it from the idea that these are Original Characters that just happen to look like characters from another universe, with all the details that would require, that's almost always a good way to go. Fans of the other series will recognize the characters/technologies/spells/whatever, and go "oh yeah, I can see that". Others will just think you're creative, and might go check out whatver you borrowed from.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, digging too heavily into another series--especially when the series aren't properly explained to an outsider--will almost always end up badly. A good crossover adds exposition equal to the level of extra information unrelated to the primary universe (naruto, in your case). But then someone will complain that there's not enough plot, so just be prepared.
